The women of New Salem AME Church gathered recently to celebrate their heritage with a women's hat show.

The hat show is just one of the many heritage events that will be going on throughout the year.

"We would like to share with you as a part of Salem's outreach ministries," said Mildred Johnson. “The hat show was just one of the ways to help raise money to continue to support the community in so many ways.”

Salem's outreach ministry helps feed 90 to 100 homeless women and children each first Saturday of the month. After several months of repairs to the women's shelter, they will resume feeding the women the first Saturday in June. A clothes closet for those in need of clothing is also offered. The group also continues to serve free beans and cornbread every Wednesday at noon.

In support of the recent needs due to the flooding, Salem’s outreach ministry has also donated clothes, furniture, food and time to assist families who have lost everything. "We will continue to serve anyone in need of those items," Johnson said.

New Salem AME Church is located at 1800 4th Ave. N. Rev. Anthony L. Thomas, Sr. is the pastor.
