This month the ‘Nashville 1st Saturday Downtown Art Crawl’ has a few new wrinkles. Among them, a visit from an international celebrity, something special from the Nashville Film Festival, and the debut of an old friend’s new home. The First Saturday Downtown Art Crawl is an established tradition on the downtown scene. Each month the art galleries on the Avenue of the Arts, 5th Avenue North between Church Street and Charlotte Avenue, open up for receptions. Let’s take a peek at what April’s event has in store for art lovers. Remember it’s all free and open to the public from 6-9 pm on Saturday, April 6.
The Rymer Gallery is hosting a very special weekend for art by Bernie Taupin. Taupin is best known as the writing partner, and life partner, of music icon Sir Elton John. Taupin is also a well-regarded visual artist in his own right, and his works will be on display and for sale at the gallery over the weekend. Early Saturday and Sunday afternoon, April 6 and 7, from 1-3 pm each day, Taupin will greet potential buyers and fans. The events take place following a concert by Sir Elton at the Bridgestone Arena on Friday, April 5. As a perk, each painting purchased between the Uncrating Event on Friday, March 29 from 6-8 pm at the gallery, and the Friday of the show, will receive two tickets to the concert. The Tennessee Art League has been a pillar of the local art scene ever since a small group of distinguished local artists founded the League on June 17, 1954 to provide an organization for artists in Middle Tennessee to publicly exhibit their artwork. This spring the League takes another giant step forward as it moves into a new space on the Avenue of the Arts at 219 5th Avenue North. They expect to have a soft opening for the April 6, 2013 Art Crawl. The new gallery is well positioned to dramatically increase sales. Their Member’s Gallery at 219 Fifth Avenue North is much larger than the Broadway location. The artwork and gift shop will be in place for the first Saturday in April Art Crawl during which they expect 1,500 people to visit.
The Nashville Film Festival and 5th Avenue of the Arts/Downtown Nashville are jointly presenting a new opportunity for filmmakers, entitled ‘Nashville Unveiled Take One’ Video Festival Contest (NUVC). Sponsored by Nashville Arts magazine, the contest is a chance for professionals and/or amateurs to create a short film/video with the content connected to the theme, the ‘Visual Arts Scene in Nashville.’ The NUVC competition is a new Tennessee-only short video competition open to all Tennessee residents. During the First Saturday Art Crawl, April 6 (6-9 pm), the Nashville Film Festival and 5th Avenue of the Arts will announce the winners at the Arts Company 215 5th Avenue North.
