The O'Jays play Schermerhorn Center

The O’Jays play Schermerhorn Center

Last week in part one of our November Arts and Music preview, the visual arts were discussed. This week we look at a few of the great musical performances you can look forward to this month in Nashville. They encompass opera, a rock opera, and a classic soul group at the home of the Nashville Symphony.

The O’Jays
One of the world’s most legendary R&B groups is coming to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. With 24 Top Ten hits and 40+ years of making music, The O’Jays are still going strong. Dance and sing along to the hits you know and love, including: ‘Back Stabbers,’ ‘For the Love of Money,’ ‘Love Train,’ ‘I Love Music’ and so many more on Sunday, November 10, at 7:30 pm.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat
Nashville Opera presents this fascinating chamber opera. The mysterious workings of the human brain are as deep and vast as the ocean. Sometimes the functioning of the mind can have just as much to say about the condition of the heart. Composed in 1986 by Michael Nyman (composer of the award-winning score to the Oscar-winning movie The Piano) and adapted from Dr. Oliver Sacks’ best selling book of the same name. Sometimes comedic yet extremely poignant, this is the story of a man coping with personal adversity by using the power of music to organize and heal his shattered world. It is sung in English.

Performances are Friday, November 8, and Saturday, November 9, at 8 pm; and Sunday, November 10 at 2 pm. Join Nashville Opera Artistic Director John Hoomes and members of the artistic staff for a fun informative preview talk one hour before each performance in the theatre. Opera Insights: Friday, November 8, and Saturday, November 9 at 7 pm; Sunday, November 10 at 1 pm. There is a ‘talkback’ after the show. Director John Hoomes, Maestro Dean Williamson and the entire cast and crew will stay for an informal question-and-answer session after this fascinating piece. The Noah Liff Opera Center is at 3622 Redmon Street, Nashville, Tenn. 37209.
