Fisk sets Inauguration events for President H. James Williams

H. James Williams, Ph.D., C.P.A., C.M.A., J.D., LL.M., is the 15th president of Fisk University. His official Inauguration weekend is April 10-13. The highlight of the weekend is the Fisk University President’s Scholarship Gala, a star-studded event with Lee Daniels, Willie Geist, Kym Whitley, and DeeDee Bridgewater on Saturday evening.

The weekend kicks off on Thursday, April 10 at 1 pm, as the public is invited to the Fisk Honors Convocation where Dr. Juan Gilbert will be the guest speaker in the Fisk Memorial Chapel. Following the Convocation, the public is also invited to attend a 2:30 pm reception for the Honors Convocation Honorees and Donors in Van Vechten Art Gallery. The works of Fisk Alumna Barbara DuMetz will be on special exhibition there along with the phenomenal Jubilee exhibition.

Friday, April 11, at 7:30 am, the Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast in the Appleton Room of Jubilee Hall ($25 per person)
begins the day, followed by the 10 am Investiture Ceremony in the Fisk Memorial Chapel, open to the general public. At noon, the Trustees’ Luncheon honoring the President is in the Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium. It is also open to the public.

Saturday, April 12, at 11 am, the First Lady’s Campus Tour is open to the public. Meet in front of Jubilee Hall.
Academy Award-nominated director and producer Lee Daniels will headline the President’s Scholarship Gala on Saturday evening, April 12. Daniels directed the 2013 film Lee Daniels’ The Butler, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. He also produced Monster’s Ball and directed the Academy Award-winning film Precious. The event will start with a ‘Conversation with Lee Daniels,’ during which Willie Geist, co-host of NBC’s Today 9 am hour and the co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe will interview Daniels. Geist is a Vanderbilt University alumnus. The ‘Conversation’ will be followed by a reception and dinner at which Daniels will be the keynote speaker. Fisk alumna, Kym Whitley, an actress, producer, director and stand-up comedienne, will emcee the Gala along with Jonathan Martin, national correspondent who oversees the Nashville bureau of Al-Jazeera America.

Entertainment at the Gala will be provided by the internationally renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers and the celebrated jazz singer, DeeDee Bridgewater. Bridgewater is a three-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter, as well as a Tony Award-winning stage actress.

The ‘Conversation with Lee Daniels’ begins at 6 pm; the reception at 7 pm; and dinner at 8 pm at The Omni Hotel, 250 Fifth Ave. S. Tickets are $150 for the conversation only or for the reception and dinner only, $300 for the entire evening. Proceeds benefit the university’s General Scholarship Fund.
