Christ gave us a divine commandment: “A new commandment I give to you that you love one another as I loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another,” John 13:34-35. Love is an indefinite thing to most of us. We don’t know what it means when we talk about love. Everyone has natural affection, but we must beware of living our natural affections in our spiritual life. Some people we like and others we don’t like, yet we must never let those likes and dislikes rule our Christian life.
“If we walk in the light as He is the light, we have fellowship with one another,” John 1:7. The true expression of a Christian’s character is not in doing good things but in being like Jesus Christ. If the Spirit of God has transformed you within, you will exhibit divine characteristics in your life, not just good human characteristics. God’s life in us expresses itself as God’s life, not as human life trying to be Godly. It is easy to put Jesus first in our lives, but failure to practice the things mentioned in 2 Peter 1:1-11 (please read) will only keep us in darkness of the knowledge of Christ. When we realize that God loves us, we must love others (John 15:12). The natural man has a patronizing kind of love.
When God brings people around you who are unlovable or whom you cannot respect, you must exhibit God’s love to them just as God has exhibited it to you. Through your faith and love for Jesus Christ, God by way of the Holy Spirit, will forcibly remove any insincerity, pride and vanity from your life. So when irritable or unusually difficult people confront you, the Spirit will not let you act on how disagreeable that person can be—but you will discern how disagreeable you have been with God.
The fountains from which love flows are in God, not in us. His love is there only because it has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). Add to your faith brotherly kindness, fellowship and love. Walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5: 16).
