On Saturday, January 31, 2015, National Hook Up of Black Women (NHBW), in partnership with the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and the Coalition of 100 Black Women hosted “New Year, New You”, a Forum on Domestic Violence. Over seventy (70) mostly women attended the Forum, which was held at the Goodwill Career Center. The Domestic Violence Forum kicked off with greetings from Rep. Brenda Gilmore, President of NHBW, Dr. Phyllis Quarles Brook, representative of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and Brenda S. McKinney, President of NCNW.
Then the audience was treated to a presentation from Sarah Martin from the YWCA and Sharon Travis and the students from the YWCA SEAL Team. The highlight of the day was the story of Dr. Regina Davis-Swoers, who is a survivor of domestic abuse and her journey to wholeness. The day ended by a wonderful interactive exercise in Self-Esteem Building by Christian Coleman. The committee was chaired by Veronica Clark and members included Lanita Darby, Martha Lupai, Josephine Buggs, Dr. Ruth Dennis, and Belinda Williams.
