One thriving business in the greater Nashville area that started out in East Nashville is The Dog Spot. Since opening in 2011 at 1004 Gallatin Avenue, Andy and Chad Baker have expanded their business operations to two branch locations, in addition to operating a companion pet supply store. According to the brothers, a big supporter and helper in their success is Fifth district Metro councilman Scott Davis.

“Scott Davis helps me and my business any way he can,” said Andy Baker. “He is always willing to pick up the phone and call public works or any other department or agency he can if I am having an issue. He is very much pro-business and I sleep better at night knowing he is in my corner.”

When asked about the challenges and opportunities operating where they are, Baker said: “Fifth metro district zoning and development have been and I believe will continue to be a challenging issue for the 5th district. Scott is in favor of small business and takes every chance he gets to help the small business owner. Often an idea looks good on paper, but when it becomes costly or burdensome for a small businessperson to implement Scott is there to help find middle ground and negotiate a fair compromise or solution.

“Growth and development are very sensitive issues, but we have all seen how far Gallatin Avenue has come since the repeal of the restrictive SP zoning. We are so lucky that Scott has been instrumental in this positive change. I know Scott supports growth, but wants to balance it and make sure it’s responsible growth.”

The response from the community has been explosive, and there are many clients visible anytime you visit one of their shops.

“The East Nashville neighborhood has welcomed Spot’s Pet Supply & Dog Wash with open arms,” said Andy. “ I knew our existing customer base at The Dog Spot would embrace Spot’s Pet Supply, but it seems folks from downtown, Inglewood, Madison and all over the city have fallen in love with Spot’s. As East Nashville’s largest pet supply store and Nashville’s Largest DIY Dog Wash we attract customers from all over Davidson County and we just didn’t expect that to happen. We offer a wide selection of food, toys and treats for both dogs and cats. We even have a small animal section and novelty items such as clothing (for both dogs and humans). We try to dedicate as much room in the store as possible to locally made products from great designers like Poo Doo Leash, Luv My Leash, Mutthead, and more. We have also recently expanded our grooming department and are the perfect place to bring your pup for that overdue summer shave down. Things are great in East Nashville and at Spot’s Pet Supply & Dog Wash as well as The Dog Spot. We invite everyone to come check us out. We are open seven days a week so just pop in and see why we continue to be voted best of Nashville.”

It is important to note how the Gallatin Road location has helped become the foundation for their other operations, their other store locations and business.

“The success we have found on Gallatin Avenue in East Nashville has allowed us to purchase more real estate and further improve East Nashville, but also has given us the opportunity to open locations in Mt. Juliet and West Nashville. Although we are thrilled to now be in other areas of town, East Nashville is where everything started and holds a special place in our hearts.”
