The historical Clark Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 1014 14th Ave., N. will be celebrating 150 years in ministry this fall. This Homecoming celebration will take place on October 5 at 10:45 am. The theme is ‘An Old Message for a New Era.’
In celebration of 150 years, the United Methodist Men will be having their annual Men’s Day with one worship service on Sunday, June 28 at 10:45 am, celebrating with the theme ‘Men Professing Hope in the Midst of Despair.’ The speaker for this service will be Dr. James E. K. Hildreth, newly appointed president of Meharry University.
Dr. Hildreth is an international HIV/AIDS research pioneer and former Meharry professor. Dr. Hildreth is returning to Nashville from UC Davis College of Biological Sciences in California.
Hildreth has a special interest for the care of Nashville’s most vulnerable citizens.
“Coming to a place whose whole history and founding was to take care of people who are disadvantaged and poor was very powerful for me,” Hildreth said. “That’s why I came in the first place and that’s why I have come back. Meharry’s mission, its history, the people, everything about it resonates with who I am and what I’d like to achieve with my life and my work.”
Hildreth will assume his new role at Meharry, as president, on July 1, replacing sitting President A. Cherrie Epps, who has served as Meharry’s president/CEO since July 2013.
“It is indeed a special time at Clark Memorial for the United Methodist Men,” said Melvin Kirk, chair of the United Methodist Men. “We are grateful to have Dr. Hildreth as the speaker and long-time member of Clark.”
In preparation for this Men’s Day celebration, the United Methodist Men of Clark will be hosting a prayer breakfast on June 20 at 10 am in Clark’s fellowship hall. Special guest will give a brief reflection, focusing on an old message of hope in this new era of despair.
