Families encouraged to apply for utility bill help before end of month

The Metropolitan Action Commission encourages any resident who has not received assistance from the agency with their utility payment since last October to apply before the end of this month.

“The current program year for our energy assistance program goes from October 1, 2014 until September 30, 2015. We encourage customers that have not been helped during this time period to apply,” said Marvin D. Cox, Community Services Director.

LIHEAP is a one-time energy assistance program that helps families with low incomes to meet their household energy costs. Metro Action sends the payment directly to the energy supplier on the customer’s behalf.

Metro Action received its initial allotment of $3.9 million, however the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) released an additional $2 million this summer to cover the waiting list and customers that had not been served during the current program year.

The application for the energy assistance is available on the agency’s webpage , at area libraries, and the Nashville Electric Service. The current application must be received at Metro Action by September 30.

Customers who need assistance with completing the application may visit Metro Action during customer care hours, which are Monday through Thursday from 8 am until 3 pm.

Customers who have already been helped during the current year will not be eligible until October 1.

The agency is located in the Clifford Allen Building, located at 800 2nd Avenue North (37201). Parking is available on site.

Metro Action receives funding from THDA as a pass through grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to administer LIHEAP in Davidson County.
