Time for something new on Fall TV

There are quite a few fascinating new shows on the Fall schedules for the five major national broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox, and NBC. These and other national networks are available on free digital broadcast, most notably Bounce TV, METV, CoziTV, Retro TV, ION, THiS, along others. These networks do not offer newly produced comedy and drama programming on the scale of the five ‘majors,’ however. Next week, in part two, we will look at returning favorites.

Let’s take a look at some of the new shows that will air as the fall season begins this month on ABC, CBS, The CW, NBC, and FOX, with African American actors in bold. They are presented here alphabetically (with their networks and premiere dates):

Blindspot – Woman (Jaimie Alexander) with no memories of her past is found naked in Times Square with her body covered in tattoos and gains attention of the FBI. Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Ukweli Roach. (NBC, 9p Mon Sep 21).

Blood and Oil – Young couple (Chace Crawford, Rebecca Rittenhouse) move to North Dakota’s oil fields to make big money, but ruthless tycoon (Don Johnson) stands in their way. Delroy Lindo, (ABC, 8p Sun Sep 27)

Grandfathered – John Stamos, longtime bachelor, discovers he’s a father and a grandfather. Christina Millian. (Fox, 7p Tue Sep 29)

Heroes Reborn – Zachary Levi stars in this 13-episode series reboot, with ordinary people trying to understand and live with their extraordinary abilities. Original cast Jack Coleman, Masi Oka and Jimmy Jean-Louis return, with Judi Shekoni and Robbie Kay. (NBC, 7p Thur Sep 24 – 2hr premiere)

Limitless – Brian Sinclair uses his NZT abilities to solve FBI cases. Hill Harper (CBS, 9p Tue Sep 22)

Minority Report – Ten years after the Tom Cruise movie, “pre-cog” Dash struggles to live a normal life with help from detective – Meagan Good. (Fox, 8p Mon Sep 21)

The Player – In Las Vegas, Philip Winchester, sniper-turned-security expert, has to perform “series of heroic challenges” to save innocent lives. Wesley Snipes is “pit boss” of game. (NBC, 9p Thur Sep 24)

RosewoodMorris Chestnut is Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, top private pathologist in Miami, uses sophisticated, state-of-the-art lab to find secrets in bodies that others miss and help cynical female detective. (Fox, 7p Wed Sep 23)

Scream Queens – Anthology series about college campus rocked by series of murders. Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Oliver Hudson, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer, Nick Jonas, Ariana Grande, Billie Lourd, Skyler Samuels, Lucien Laviscount, Niecy Nash, Diego Boneta, Glen Powell, and Nasim Pedrad. (FOX, 8p Tue; Sep 22 – 2hr premiere at 7p)

Supergirl – Melissa Benoist stars as Kara Zor-El, who escaped her home planet Krypton during its destruction. After hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin Superman, she finally decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be a hero. Calista Flockhart, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh and David Harewood. (CBS, Oct 26)
