Who is Rev. Judy A. Johnson and what makes her and her ministry unique? This is a question that she no doubt hears a lot and graciously answers, when asked. We originally met this esteemed woman of God at a ‘Beauty Behinds Bars’ (BBB) community outreach event. BBB is a part of the ‘Once in a Wifetime’ ministry founded by Tiffany Love-Harden. Pastor Judy is the official minister for the group, along with having other titles. On the top of it all, she remains the senior pastor for the Claiborne Street Missionary Baptist Church, which is located in South Nashville. The church itself is an invaluable icon that is grounded in the center of two area housing projects: 1) J.C. Napier Place; and 2) Sudekem Housing.

Rev. Judy A. Johnson was a member of Claiborne Street Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Rev. Robert W. Finney for over 25 five years. She received her calling into the ministry also under his leadership. In May of 2005, she became senior pastor of Claiborne Street Missionary Baptist Church. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, she along with the members changed the name of the church to ‘Claiborne Family of Faith Worship Center.’ To date, she is the senior pastor with over 10 years of service to the church. Pastor Judy either participates in, or hosts a variety of outreach ministries for the area at large.

With a theme like ‘Transforming Lives Worldwide,’ there is little room for uncertainty. It’s all about the ministry and doing God’s work in the lives of many. Her range of ‘kingdom work’ is strong and focused. She has and continues to work within her church and to a variety of outreach ministries, including: ‘Jewell Ministries for Women’’ ‘Looking Absolutely Clean,’ with Shawn Holmes; ‘Miss. Black Tennessee,’ with La Donna Boyd; and many more. Sowing a seed into a realm of various ministries such as the ‘Mississippi Father Daughter Program’ and supporting ‘Medical and Dental Doctors in Haiti’ is par for the course for both Rev. Judy and Claiborne Street Missionary Baptist Church.

She ministers to anyone who walks into her church and keeps the boundaries of a ‘no judgment zone.’ This could range from political officials, to lay people, to gang members to seasoned or even new Christians in the making. Everyone is welcome to worship, fellowship and become a part of the ministry. And Rev. Judy is not just another pretty face. She is a well rounded, fiery woman of God and a seasoned, well-versed Christian—known to nurture, cultivate and keep all confidences of those seeking her wisdom intact.

The work by no means stops there. The amazing successes and accomplishments of the lady and her ministry could easily fill up several blank pages. In short, if it’s about serving God, community and his people, then it’s about the business of Rev. Judy A. Johnson. We caught up with her and posed the question: “What’s coming next in the year ahead?”

“There are so many great things in store,” she said, “and both Claiborne and the people have a lot to look forward to.”
