Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a superhero action film featuring the iconic DC Comics characters Batman and Superman. It is a follow-up to 2013’s Superman reboot Man of Steel and the second installment in the planned DC Extended Universe film series. The film is directed by Zack Snyder, who also directed Man of Steel, with a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the first live-action film to feature both Batman and Superman, as well as the first theatrical film to feature a live-action portrayal of Wonder Woman, with brief glipses of Aquaman, the Flash and Cyborg. The incarnation of Batman in the film is not related to the one in the previous Batman/Dark Knight film trilogy. Following the devastating events of Man of Steel, where many died in the alien attack on Metropolis, Gotham City-based vigilante Batman travels to Metropolis. In the film Gotham City is right across the bay from Metropolis, like San Francisco and Oakland. Batman’s plan is to preemptively combat Superman, fearing what would happen if the latter is kept unchecked. All the while another huge threat endangers all of humankind.
“I wouldn’t call this a Superman sequel,” said Henry Cavill, who stars as Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman, a Kryptonian survivor and a journalist for the Daily Planet who uses his superhuman abilities to protect the Earth.”This is
Batman versus Superman. It’s a separate entity altogether. It is introducing the Batman character and expanding upon the universe, which was kicked off by Man of Steel.”
Amy Adams returns as Lois Lane, dauntless reporter for the Daily Planet and girlfriend of Clark Kent/Superman. Diane Lane returns as Martha Kent, Clark’s adoptive mother. Laurence Fishburne returns as Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet and Clark and Lois’s boss.
New to the film series, Ben Affleck plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, a billionaire socialite and owner of Wayne Financial who dedicates himself to protect Gotham City from its criminal underworld as a masked vigilante. Jeremy Irons plays Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s chief of security and trusted confidant. Jesse Eisenberg plays Lex Luthor, a sociopathic young businessman and 2nd generation CEO of LexCorp, who becomes fixated on defeating Superman.
Also new the the franchise are Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, an Amazon princess and 5,000-year-old demigoddess daughter of Zeus; Ray Fisher, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller are Victor Stone/Cyborg, Arthur Curry/Aquaman and Barry Allen/The Flash respectively, in roles to lead into the Justice League film. Harry Lennix and Christina Wren also reprise their roles as Secretary Swanwick and Major Carrie Farris. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan briefly portray Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s deceased parents, in flashbacks.
