X-Men: Apocalypse is a new superhero film based on the X-Men characters from Marvel Comics. Directed by Bryan Singer, it is the ninth installment in the X-Men film series, which is completely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film series featuring the Avengers.

In Apocalypse, the psychic cyber-mutant En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac) rules ancient Egypt until betrayed by his worshippers, who entomb him alive. En Sabah Nur’s loyal followers, the Four Horsemen, die protecting and preserving him. Awakening in 1983, and believing that without his presence humanity has lost its way, En Sabah Nur decides to destroy the world and remake it in his image. He recruits new Horsemen, beginning with Kenyan-American pickpocket Ororo Munroe (Alexandra Shipp), the mutant known as Storm.

Raven Darkhölme (Jennifer Lawrence) is Mystique, a mutant with shapeshifting abilities, who while investigating an underground fight club, finds Warren Worthington III, (Ben Hardy), who possesses a pair of large feathered wings extending from his back, and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who has the ability to teleport. Raven rescues Nightcrawler while En Sabah Nur arrives to cure the wounded Angel by replacing his wings with metal ones, renaming him Archangel and recruiting him as another Horseman. Raven alerts Charles Xavier / Professor X, (James McAvoy), to En Sabah Nur and brings Nightcrawler to the institute. Xavier and Alex consult with CIA agent Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) to learn more about En Sabah Nur, unaware that William Stryker (Josh Helman) is still conspiring against them.

At En Sabah Nur’s behest, Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto (Michael Fassbender) uses his powers to control Earth’s magnetic poles, causing widespread destruction across the planet and mass casualties. En Sabah Nur confronts Xavier in the astral plane, intending to possess him. The X-Men arrive and battle the Horsemen in an epic confrontation.

Olivia Munn is Elizabeth Braddock / Psylocke – a mutant with telepathic and telekinetic abilities, who becomes another of Apocalypse’s horsemen, Pestilence. Others include Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy / Beast; Sophie Turner as Jean Grey / Phoenix ; Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers / Cyclops; Lucas Till as Alex Summers / Havok, a mutant who has the ability to absorb energy and release it with destructive force from his body, and the older brother of Cyclops. Evan Peters is Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver, and Lana Condor is Jubilation Lee / Jubilee.

X-Men: Apocalypse has received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 52%, based on 112 reviews, with an average of 5.6/10; along with a 99% Want To See fan rating. The website’s critical consensus reads, “Overloaded action and a cliched villain take the focus away from otherwise strong performers and resonant themes, making X-Men: Apocalypse a middling chapter of the venerable superhero franchise.” Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, action and destruction, brief strong language and some suggestive images, the film runs 144 minutes.
