Tony Award-winning Broadway star LaChanze joins the national tour of If/Then when it plays a limited one-week engagement at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s Andrew Jackson Hall June 7-12. LaChanze’s addition to the touring cast reunites her with Jackie Burns and Anthony Rapp, who along with LaChanze starred in the original Broadway production of If/Then.

If/Then is a contemporary new musical that follows two distinct storylines in the life of Elizabeth, a city planner who moves back to New York to restart her life in that city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth’s life splits in two parallel paths. If/Then follows both stories simultaneously as this modern woman faces the intersection of choice and chance.

LaChanze reprises her role as Kate, an elementary school teacher and Elizabeth’s spirited new neighbor. LaChanze is perhaps best known for her Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical-winning performance as Celie in The Color Purple (2006), and has received seven major awards including that Tony, an Emmy (2010), an Obie (2005), three Audience Awards, Outer Critics Circle Award, along with 3 Drama Desk Award nominations. She won the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway debut in 1991. Her other Broadway credits include Ragtime, Company, and Uptown..It’s Hot!

LaChanze has also appeared in numerous roles in films and television shows, including as Rachel in The Help in 2011. Most recently, I recognized her as Mona in a pivotal role in the currently airing final season of CBS’s Person of Interest.

If/Then was written by Tom Kitt (music) and Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics), and directed by Michael Greif, the creative team behind the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical Next to Normal. IF/THEN features choreography by Larry Keigwin, set design by Tony Award Nominee Mark Wendland, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by Tony Award-Winner Kenneth Posner and sound design by Tony Award Winner Brian Ronan. Casting is by Telsey + Company/Craig Burns, CSA. Mark Myars is the Associate Choreographer.
