God’s Trombones presented at Belmont Arts Center

Our Family Productions will bring a presentation to Nashville of God’s Trombones on October 8 at the Massey Arts Center at Belmont University, 1900 Belmont Blvd. The community is invited to attend James Weldon Johnson’s God’s Trombones, with doors opening at 6 pm and the show beginning at 7 pm.

“This is the most explosive sound on this side of the Mississippi,” said Dr. Barbara McDaniel-Suggs. Suggs is the former chair of the Speech and Dramatic Arts Dept. at Jackson State University.

Our Family Productions provides refreshing entertainment presented by three siblings, Amanzo, Mary and Lillian Jones. The Jones family is native to Merigold, Mississippi. The group enjoys performing to diverse groups at a variety of venues, such as college and university campuses, conventions and performing arts centers. Our Family Productions entertains through inspiring poetry, scintillating humor, assorted literary works, cultural pieces, and religious expressions.

“We are dedicated to providing wholesome entertainment that is enlightening, enriching, enjoyable and inspiring,” according to a family statement.

This trio has performed internationally across the United States.

The audience is sure to be fascinated by the performance of God’s Trombones by James Weldon Johnson who was a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance, and one of the most revered African American literary figures and political leaders of all time. His life demonstrated the full spectrum of struggle and success. God’s Trombones is one of his most celebrated works.

Inspirational sermons of African American preachers are re-imagined as poetry, reverberating with the musicality and splendid eloquence of the spirituals. This classic collection includes ‘Listen Lord (A Prayer),’ ‘The Creation,’ ‘The Prodigal Son,’ ‘Go Down Death (A Funeral Sermon),’ ‘Noah Built the Ark,’ ‘The Crucifixion,’ ‘Let My People Go,’ and ‘The Judgment Day.’ Spectators will be amazed at the well-trained voices of the performers.
