Fisk University celebrates Homecoming 2016 November 6 through November 12. Their theme this year is Journey through the Decades. Fisk has activities for returning alumni, as well as current and future (prospective) students and friends of the historic school, Nashville’s first University. The university’s Homecoming week celebrates long-standing traditions with a Royal Coronation and Ball, concerts, sports events, a fashion show, and of course, parties.
The festivities began Sunday morning, Nov. 6 with a homecoming Chapel Service Service in the Clinton B. Fisk Memorial Chapel. The Fisk SGA presented their 2nd Annual Judge Allegra Walker Oratorical Contest in the Fisk Memorial Chapel at 6pm, followed by the Homecoming Kick off- Caravan at 10pm.
Monday’s activities included the From then until now… Fashion Show and Lip Sync Battle in the Appleton Room of Jubilee Hall. Tuesday, November 8 was Go to the Polls Day of Action – with voting encouraged at the various polling locations from 7am-7pm, followed by Pillows and Politics in the Appleton Room from 9pm until 1am.
Wednesday’s events included the Mr. & Miss Fisk Coronation entitled “Harlem Nights: The Birth of a New Era Coronation” at 7 pm in the Chapel followed by the Coronation Ball at 9 pm in the Appleton Room. Thursday’s slate included The Royal Court Tea in the Appleton Room at 2pm, and the Homecoming Concert featuring Skippa da Flippa & Young Scooter at 9 pm in the Gymnasium.
Friday’s special attraction is Legacy Day, which allows Fisk University alumni to bring their children and grandchildren on campus to attend classes and learn about the Fisk Experience. Legacy Day is geared toward high school juniors and seniors.
Friday begins at 8 am with actual college class attendance with student representatives, and the Fisk Pep Rally at 12 Noon. A 90’s Welcome Home Tent (21 & up) will be open on The Yard from 1pm-6pm, featuring DJ MARS. A Young Alumni Association / G.A.A.F.U. Inc. Pre-Alumni/Alumni Reception / Mixer is at the Rotunda from 5pm – 6:30pm, followed by several concurrent events: a Jazz Concert featuring Orchestrated Crown in the Fisk Memorial Chapel at 7pm; “The Last Drop” Ole Skool Flavor at Harambe House at 7pm; Taking it back to the Old School Greek Show in the Gymnasium at 7pm (Admission – $15.00); and the Fisk University Stage crafters present In The Continuum in the Fisk Little Theater at 7pm.
Saturday starts with TailGating & Yard Fest at 11am before the Homecoming Parade at 1 pm. Basketball games ($10 admission) at 3 pm (womens) and 5 pm (mens) in the Gymnasium pit the Fisk Bulldogs against the visiting Stillman Tigers. After the games, the Fisk University Stage crafters once again present In The Continuum in the Little Theater at 7pm.
Homecoming concludes Sunday, November 13, with a Brunch Mixer presented by the Young Alumni Division/GAAFU, Inc. in the Tent at 12noon (Admission $10.00).
