Charlie Wilson has become a fixture here in this country-laden town. Year after year, he brings his tour to downtown Nashville. This past Sunday night was the date on the calendar for 2017, and it was a treat indeed, as old school and a dab of new school were on display. From the young to the old, they all came out. This was as blended of a concert as you’d ever see. Uncle Charlie, Johnny Gill and Fantasia fans were in full effect, pumped and excited to see their favorite musical stars, live in concert. The very successful R&B trio is known for some huge hits, whether individually (solo) or with a group. This was almost a sold-out affair. Bridgestone Arena was packed from top to bottom.
Fantasia, whose voice rivals her outer appearance, came out blazing. “Her voice just touches your soul, hitting you to the core of your being,” said a passionate female fan near the front row. Although Johnny was Charlie’s opener, Fantasia had the crowd on their heels, singing her greatest hits thus far. Her facial expressions were full of passion and pain, but endearing at the same time. When Fantasia sang, fans connected with her and her soulful voice.
After a brief intermission, fans were ready to see the one and only Charlie Wilson. He wouldn’t keep his flock waiting long. He delivered with a bang! His opening was phenomenal. A mini marching band followed suit. The Gap Band’s former lead vocalist kept the party jumping all night long. Once Charlie stepped on stage, ‘Party Train’ was the theme. Fans were awed with Wilson’s singing capabilities, as well as his dance moves. Over 60 years of age and he’s still got it. A born entertainer, who puts on a show like no other. Fans were on their feet almost the entire two hours.
It was no surprise that the custom made costumes for Wilson and his whole crew were very colorful, vibrant and full of life. Of course he brought church to the stage with a little semi-sermon. He almost had an alter call. He eventually got back to the music, ending his testimony by blending the following songs into his set: ‘You Are,’ ‘Yearning for Your Love,’ ‘Outstanding,’ ‘You Dropped a Bomb,’ ‘There Goes My Baby,’ ‘Can’t Live Without You,’ ‘Charlie, Last Name Wilson’ and many more. Hit after hit kept coming.
Fantasia proves time after time that she was born to sing and entertain. Every time she graces the stage, she reminds people who she is with those impressive jaw-dropping pipes that won her season three of American Idol back in 2004. This phenomenal natural talent is a next-level performer who can hold her own against anybody, even with all of the emotion.
If you were there, you were entertained. Johnny Gill and Fantasia were splendid, but Uncle Charlie was the life of the party. The concert was fabulous. Charlie Wilson is a living legend and definitely gives fans the value of their ticket.
