Expressions of faith: A serving community

Rev. Monterey D. Lee, Sr.

We were created by God for a reason. Not one of us is here by mistake. We were all created by God for the good of mankind. God certainly wants to use us in ways we never expected. Our purpose on earth is to love and serve God, and then to take that same love and serve others.

Since we cannot serve God directly, so to speak, we ultimately serve Him by serving others. We are more effective servants when we do it together in oneness as a community than when we serve alone. “But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be servant of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many,” Mark 10: 43-45.

There are some things that we learn only through experience. We can learn by studying on our own, by reading the Bible and praying, and by listening to teaching. These are all valuable ways of acquiring knowledge. “The discerning heart seeks knowledge,” Proverbs 15:14.

God designed us to be better together and wants us to be a community that cares one for another. There are things He wants us to know that we can learn only through our experiences together.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their work. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow brother in the Lord. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up when he is down,” Ecclesiastes 4:9-11.

God wants us to remember what we have learned so we don’t have to learn it again! In this session, let’s learn why God wants us to serve together—how our giftedness is to be used. Serve one another, in spite of the bitterness that we see in this world. Let us serve with tenderness unto the Lord.
