Fisk University to inaugurate Kevin D. Rome during Spring Arts Festival Week

Fisk University is having a HUGE week of activities between Monday, April 2 and Sunday, April 8, 2018. The President’s Investiture Ceremony and Inauguration Scholarship Gala are part of a week-long schedule of events to be held as Fisk University celebrates the inauguration of Dr. Kevin D. Rome, Sr., the 16th president of the university. The week coincides with the school’s annual spring arts festival.

Fisk University will inaugurate Kevin D. Rome, Sr., Ph.D. as the 16th president of the university on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 1:00pm at the Fisk Memorial Chapel; the event is free and open to the public. In spring 2017, the Fisk University Board of Trustees selected Rome after nearly an eight-month process that involved engagement forums with alumni clubs in multiple states, on-campus faculty and staff forums, and communications with key stakeholders of the university community. Rome began his term as president on July 1, 2017.

Before the presidency at Fisk, Rome served as president of Lincoln University of Missouri from July 2013 – June 2017. With over 20 years in higher education, Rome has served in administrative roles as vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management at North Carolina Central University, vice president for student services at Morehouse College, vice president for campus life at Clayton State University, and assistant vice chancellor for student life and diversity at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. A native of Columbus, GA, Rome holds a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, a master’s degree from the University of Georgia and a doctorate degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

The 89th Annual Spring Arts Festival begins Monday, April 2nd, with the Fisk University Choir and Friends Live In Concert, 7:00pm, Fisk Memorial Chapel. Tuesday, April 3rd, enjoy Jazz at Noon featuring the Fisk University Jazz Ensemble at 12 Noon, Fisk University Grove (Free Admission), followed by Molasses: The Reenactment featuring Laurent Ewing at 7:00pm, Dance Studio of New Livingstone Hall ($10.00 – General Admission; $5.00 – Student Admission – University ID Required); this will also be performed Sunday, April 8th at 3:00pm.

Wednesday, April 4th, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Convocation is at 5:00pm, Fisk Memorial Chapel (Free Admission).

Wednesday and Thursday, the Stagecrafters’ present The Wiz – a dinner theater, at 7:00pm in the Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium each night; The Wiz is adapted from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by Frank Baum, book by William F. Brown, music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, and presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. ($25.00 – General Admission; $15.00 – Student Admission (University ID Required; and $300.00 – Reserved Table).

Thursday, April 5th, the Student Art Show is at 10:00 am in the Aaron Douglas Art Gallery (Free Admission). No events Friday (Inauguration Scholarship Gala).

Sunday, April 8th, the Fisk for Fisk Concert is at 7:00pm, Fisk Memorial Chapel, $20 General Admission.

Four-time GRAMMY award winner India.Arie will headline the Ryman Auditorium with the world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers on Saturday, April 7 at 8:00 p.m. Proceeds from this year’s Spring Sing concert will benefit the Fisk Jubilee Singers’ scholarship fund. Making a special guest appearance will be singer/songwriter Lauren McClinton, a 2016 Fisk alumna and former member of The Fisk Jubilee Singers. The concert will feature the Singers’ traditional repertoire and collaborations with guest artists under the direction of Paul T. Kwami, D.M.A. Shannon Sanders, the GRAMMY, Emmy and Dove award-winning producer, will serve as co-musical director for the concert with Kwami.

“The Fisk Jubilee Singers and the Ryman Auditorium are two of Nashville’s greatest institutions,” Sanders said. “I am honored to again work alongside Dr. Kwami and the Singers to present a great night of music for the Nashville community.”
