Robert Clayton Sherrill is a North Nashville native with what most would definitely deem a rough start in life. But he has overcome, and he is a true living testament to the age old adage ‘we don’t look like what we’ve been through’. As a young man swayed by his environment, Robert’s chosen path led him to the federal penitentiary where he vowed to make a change for his family and himself. After his release, he opened Imperial Cleaning Systems (ICS), a growing commercial cleaning, restoration and janitorial company based in his hometown Nashville, Tennessee where he serves as President and CEO.
“A journey suggests the passage from one place to another,” says Sherrill. “Each journey is different. Some paths prove more turbulent. Some days are more sunny. But the journey always makes you better.”
The Journey Back to Now is the autobiographical work of Sherrill, and the newly-released book shows how the paths he took led him back to his now. The book chronicles how, through poverty, street life, drug charges and time in prison, Robert was able to find redemption and a second chance at life. Battling addiction, succumbing to the vices of life on the corner and struggling to find himself, Robert became entangled in a web that was hard to escape from, and from which many do not. While he reached new heights, the price of notoriety and success turned out to be pretty high. Losing everything was the exact thing he needed to get him on his journey back to now.
The Journey Back to Now, by Robert C. Sherrill, was released in paperback on March 29, 2018, and is available on Amazon and in bookstores. The book has been highly praised and is a critical success, with an average of 5.0 out of 5 stars at press time.
One reviewer calls it “A real underdog story,” noting, “Roberts story shows that no matter the circumstances we face in life it is never to late to bounce back. It is inspiring to see someone who has experienced hardships early in life that could break most people and take those circumstances and turn it around for a positive outcome. If this book has taught me anything is that it is never to late to reach your goals and make your dreams a reality.”
“From turbulence to success, this story is a great read for EVERYONE!,” says another. “Robert’s story offers a transparency to the lifestyle that we often only see in movies. His tale of a turbulent past, an ‘aha’ moment and rise to success is one that will encourage, inspire and motivate any one who picks up this book. You will finish this book full of hope and confidence about what you can accomplish regardless of background, hindrances and hardships.”
Along with Joshua Mundy, Sherrill is co-owner of The Lab, located at 624 Jefferson Street. They recently opened the space as a way to bring business-minded people together.
“You get 24-hour access. We’ll have entrepreneurship classes. We’ll have social hours,” Mundy has said. Monthly members of The Lab have unlimited access to the space, wi-fi, on-site parking, and discounted printing. You can even rent space for the day if you have a meeting with a client or need a place to brainstorm. The owners said they hope The Lab will fuel creativity in the community and lead to local success stories.
“I grew up in this neighborhood, and just to be able to grow up out here and see the change and the growth and be a part of it is awesome,” said Sherrill.
