Enjoy Free Comic Book Day May 5

Free Comic Book Day cosplayers include Black Panther, Falcon, Superman, Black Widow and Winter Soldier.

Free Comic Book Day is an annual event founded on the belief that for every person out there, there’s a comic book that they’ll love. Every first Saturday in May, the industry comes together to give away free comics and encourage fans, both old and new, to flock to the best place in the comic book community: local comic shops. These are the hubs of the community, where fans can come together and discover new comics, make lifelong friends, and find a sense of commonality.

Major publishers such as DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, and Image Comics put out free comics for fans to enjoy at the more than 2,300 local comic shops participating in Free Comic Book Day. There’s truly a book for everyone: from superheroes, to popular film and television shows, to beloved video games, and all-ages stories.

Fans also love dressing up in costume for Free Comic Book Day, showing off their favorite series. Many stores throw their own events, bringing in cosplayers, local comic book creators, and partner with local businesses to make Free Comic Book Day one of the best family events throughout the year.

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) 2018 features an amazing selection of comic book titles for the industry’s most anticipated annual event which happens Saturday, May 5th, 2018 at participating comic book shops worldwide. Retailers on the Selection Committee chose fifty titles overall to be available on Free Comic Book Day: twelve Gold Sponsor comics and thirty-eight Silver Sponsor comics that give fans a great opportunity to discover new titles and genres. This year’s announcement of Silver Sponsor comics includes such great titles as Adventure Time, Berlin, Infinity Watch/Spider-Man, Nintendo’s Arms, Star Wars Adventures, and more.

“It’s a great time to be a comics fan, and an even greater time to experience the medium of comic books for the first time during our 17th annual Free Comic Book Day,” said Joe Field, originator of FCBD, and owner of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, CA. “The amazing line-up of titles, the great events staged by thousands of independent comic book retailers, and the enthusiasm of comic shop fans all over the world will make May 5, 2018 a great day to celebrate comic books!”

A complete listing of all fifty FCBD titles, including the twelve Gold Sponsor and thirty-eight Silver Sponsor comic books, can be found in the January issue of Diamond Comic Distributors’ PREVIEWS catalog, on sale at comic book shops now, and on the official Free Comic Book Day website.

As the name implies, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops. Different shops have policies on how many free comics you can receive, but you will receive at least one free comic if you enter a participating shop location. Check with your retailer for their policies and plans for FCBD.

Not every comic book store in the world is doing this. If you’re wondering about convenience stores with a spinner rack of comics in a corner somewhere – nope. This event celebrates the independent comic book specialty shops, thousands of which exist in North America alone. Each one is unique in its community, with a style and personality all its own, and each one carries a full line of comics, graphic novels, toys and related products.

Each shop determines on its own whether or not to participate.

The first Free Comic Book Day event was held in 2002. In the past, thousands of shops around the world have given away millions of free comic books to interested readers. Free Comic Book Day is administered by a panel representing all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and Diamond Comic Distributors. Each year, publishers apply to provide comic books at cost to retailers, who in turn give them away for free. Diamond handles marketing and logistics for the event, shipping comics to shops and handling marketing and PR for the event.

Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse story lines that capture the imagination of the readers. That’s worth celebrating. Shops in Canada and internationally celebrate Free Comic Book Day, too. Any comic book shop in the world can participate in Free Comic Book Day, although there may be some limitations on which titles are available in which countries due to licensing and other considerations.

Shops will be giving away special comics for the event – you cannot simply take any comic book from the rack. Tell your friends, your family, your classmates- anyone you think might enjoy comics for the first time- or should start reading them again.
