Former Councilman Loniel Greene Jr. passed away last Wednesday after a brief hospitalization for what was first reported a cardiac arrest. The Davidson County Medical Examiner’s office has since ruled Greene’s death the result of what was likely a drug overdose. According to reports, traces of opioids and cocaine were found in his urine.
He was 37 years old.
Green was an Iraq War veteran and former Metro Nashville councilman, who resigned shortly into his term amid legal issues.
The Greene family issued the following statement:
“It is with great sadness, we announce the death of former Councilman and Iraqi war veteran, our brother, and son of Nashville, Loniel Greene. He suffered from cardiac arrest on Sunday, July 8th and despite exceptional medical care, he departed this life today. Loniel loved serving our community and our country. His sudden death has been heartbreaking and he will be dearly missed.
We would like to thank his medical team and the numerous community members, and elected officials that have stood with Loniel in prayer during this trying week and have expressed their love and condolences during this time.
Councilwoman Sharon Hurt, who knew Greene and served on the council with him posted on Facebook, “My heart is heavy!!! I lift up former Councilman Loniel Greene’s mother during this time of bereavement. Such a tragic loss from someone who was on top of his career and life. He was a good man with a bright future. It just breaks my heart!!!”
