As the summer slips away into autumn, the month of August brings hot treats for art lovers in the Music City. Among the offerings are an Art Deco Affair, a great show at the TSU Downtown Campus Library, and free weekend art crawls. If you missed last week’s 12th Anniversary 1st Saturday Downtown Art Crawl, don’t despair. You can still visit these downtown galleries during regular hours: The Arts Company, Rymer Gallery, and Tinney Contemporary on the 5th Avenue of the Arts. You can always visit the Frist Art Museum on Broadway and see great exhibits, and even participate in a very special event. Enjoy An Art Deco Affair at the Frist on Saturday, August 18.
Attend an Art Deco Affair at the Frist Art Center is Saturday, August 18, from 7:00–10:00 p.m. Co-chairs Francie Fisher and Leigh Lovett invite you to once again celebrate the Golden Age of Glamour while supporting the care of the Frist’s 1930s art deco building. Enjoy cocktails, light bites, exclusive access to the galleries, and music by DJ AyDamn.
Your ticket ( $65 per person ) gives you access to everything. Attire for the evening is ‘Old Hollywood’; for more information, contact Alyssa Blades at 615.744.3963 or firstname.lastname@example.org. You must be 21+ to attend. All proceeds from the event support the ongoing care of the Frist Center’s historic art deco building, one of Nashville’s greatest architectural landmarks.
The Frist Art Museum is located in downtown Nashville at 919 Broadway. The Museum is currently featuring several great exhibitions: Image Building: How Photography Transforms Architecture in the Upper-Level Galleries; Chaos and Awe: Painting for the 21st Century in the Ingram Gallery; The Presence of Your Absence Is Everywhere by Afruz Amighi in the Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery; and We Shall Overcome: Civil Rights and the Nashville Press, 1957–1968 in the Conte Community Arts Gallery.
Or if you’re not up for a jazzy art deco evening, enjoy the 12th bi-monthly Vanguard Art Show on Saturday, August 18 from 7:00 – 11:00 pm at Track One, 1211 – 4th Avenue South. This Vanguard Art Show features artist Shabazz Larkin, live music, and other live performances. Their DJ will set the mood with Jazz, Hip Hop and Soul throughout the night. Be a part of the Vanguard! Check out their Facebook page for details and tickets.
Enjoy the current exhibition at the Library of the Tennessee State University’s Avon Williams Campus. Elisheba Israel Mrozik, Benneth WIlson, and James Threalkill have come together to bring an exquisitely dynamic group of paintings and artwork in an exhibition entitled “A Tri-Force of Creative Expression” that will inspire and instigate. See them during regular library hours. Call 615.963.7383 for hours.
And, each weekend in Nashville, enjoy a free Saturday evening art crawl as follows: Downtown and Wedgewood Houston on the 4th, then again on September 1; East Side Art Stumble on the 11th, and again on September 8; Germantown Art Crawl on the 18th, and again on September 15; and the Jefferson Street Art Crawl on the 24th, and again on September 22.
