The Cervical Cancer Coalition of Tennessee and Second Missionary Baptist Cooperative Ministries (SMB) have joined forces for a ‘walk-a-thon’ to stomp out cervical cancer and the ‘human papilloma virus.’ The event takes place on Saturday, November 10, but early registration is free and is highly suggested.
Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Various strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most cervical cancer.
When exposed to HPV, a woman’s immune system typically prevents the virus from doing harm. In small groups of women, the virus can survive for years. Therefore contributing to the process that causes some cells on the surface of the cervix to become cancer cells.
A representative from the Cervical Cancer Coalition of Tennessee said: “You can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer by having screening tests, and also by receiving a vaccine that protects against HPV infection.”
Human papilloma virus is very common. Many people don’t have any symptoms, and the infection might go away on its own. But some types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer or cancer of the anus or penis.
According to www.WebMd.com: “HPV isn’t just one virus. There are more than 100 kinds, and some are riskier than others. Each HPV virus has its own number or type. The term ‘papilloma’ refers to a kind of wart that results from some HPV types.”
There will be door prizes, food giveaways and light refreshments served after the walk. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with Navita Gunter, the founder and visionary of the Cervical Cancer Coalition of Tennessee, a nonprofit organization. The motto for the walk-a-thon is ‘This Is Not Just a Girl Thang,’ meaning that these two awful combinations (or each alone) are not just limited to females. Males are not exempt either.
Check-in begins promptly at 9 am, and the walk–a-thon begins at 10 am. The location for the walk and festivities is at the Second Missionary Baptist Church. Bishop Calvin C. Barlow, Jr. is the senior pastor of the church. The church is located at 1000 Halcyon at the corner of S. 10th Street (South Nashville) 37204.
Volunteers and donations are very much appreciated and needed. For more information about the Walk-A-Thon or to volunteer, call Lanese Campbell (at 615-298-1832 or 832-888-4187.
