Jacksonville State player pushes off the TSU defender.

The Gamecocks of Jacksonville State University clinched their fifth-straight Ohio Valley Conference title this past Saturday at Tennessee State University. Zerrick Cooper and troops made sure they ruined the celebration for the 1998 OVC Champion Big Blue Tigers’ reunion being honored at halftime. Cooper slung around three touchdown passes on the day in what was a rout. The final score was 41-14.

The Gamecocks (8-2, 7-1) are the first team in conference history to win five-straight championships. On this day, it would be easy. It looked as if they were on cruise control from the opening kick. They own the Big Blue, having beaten them eight of the last nine times and are a perfect 5-0 against the Tigers in Nashville. They rank eighth in the FCS Top 25.

The score was 27-7 at halftime, following Michael Matthews’ 16-yard scamper to the end zone. TSU couldn’t get anything going. Nor could they stop the Gamecocks. Cooper completed all three of his scoring passes on consecutive possessions.

Jamari Hester caught two touchdowns and Josh Pearson added one. Jalen Choice and Yul Gowdy each had pick-6s in the fourth quarter for the Gamecocks’ defense.

For TSU, Shawn McColley had 93 yards on seven carries and a score. Te’kendrick Roberson ended with 68 yards (58 on one play) on 10 carries and a TD. Micheal Hughes had a day to forget. He was 15 of 29 passing for 164 yards, three interceptions and zero touchdowns.

The Tigers (3-5, 2-4) close out their season at home this weekend, as they battle division foe UT Martin. Game time is 2 pm.
