Enjoy these free Art events at Belmont University

Highlighting a broad range of artwork by Belmont students, faculty and alumni, as well as other professional artists, the Leu Art Gallery and Gallery 121 are free and open to the public. It is Gallery 121’s mission to promote local and regional emerging artists, while the Leu Art Gallery’s museum-quality space focuses more exclusively on well established, mid-career level artists. The Leu Gallery in the Lila D. Bunch Library hours of operation are Monday-Friday: 9am-6pm; Saturday: 9am-5pm; Sunday: 1-6pm.

Gallery 121 inside the Leu Center for the Visual Arts exhibits a broad range of work by Belmont students, faculty and alumni – as well as the Middle Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition, a juried exhibition showcasing exceptional middle and high school student artwork from around the region. Gallery 121 hours of operation are Monday-Friday: 9am-6pm; Saturday: 12-6pm; and Sunday: 2-6pm.

All art exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public. Here are some exhibitions scheduled through the winter and spring:

Urchin by Ameila Briggs Closing Reception is Thursday, January 23 with her Artist Talk at 5pm.

Urchin by Ameila Briggs opened on Dec. 16, 2019 in Gallery 121. A Closing Reception Thursday, January 23 runs 4:30-6pm, with her Artist Talk at 5pm. Amelia Briggs is a local artist creating abstract, sculptural paintings that she identifies as “inflatables”. Most recently her studio research follows a collection of original fairy tales written by Hans Christian Anderson. This exhibition focuses on The Little Mermaid written in 1837. The exhibition ends January 24, 2020.

In The Studio Faculty Exhibition runs through February at Belmont.

In the Studio: an art faculty exhibition opened Jan. 6, 2020 in Leu Art Gallery in the Lila D. Bunch Library. Full-time faculty present recent studio projects, alongside sketches and source material each artist references in their work. In this context, each artist’s work reads as a study of sorts. The variety of work, from technique to stylistic approach, mirrors and complements the rich diversity of teaching offered. Exhibition ends February 28.

Warriors Monsters Heroes by John Donovan opening Reception is Thursday, February 6.

Warriors, Monsters and Heroes: Ceramic Sculpture by John Donovan opens Feb. 3 in Gallery 121, Reception Thursday, February 6, 4:30-6pm; Artist Talk 5pm. His work explores contradictions found in the surroundings of daily life, often using childhood toys and historic ceramic forms like pre-Columbian figures, Japanese Haniwa and Qin Dynasty terra cotta warriors as metaphors for contemporary cultural concerns. Exhibition ends Feb. 21.

25th Annual Student Exhibition Reception & Awards are Thursday, March 19.

25th Annual Student Exhibition by Belmont Art Students opens March 9 in Gallery 121 and Leu Center Lobby, Reception Thursday, March 19, 4:30-6pm, Awards Ceremony 5pm. The Department of Art and Kappa Pi present the professionally juried Annual Student Exhibition. Exhibition ends April 3.

Identity Femininity Spirituality exhibition Reception is Thursday, March 26.

Identity, Femininity, & Spirituality by Shin-hee Chin and Suki Kwon opens March 16 in Leu Art Gallery in the Lila D. Bunch Library, Reception Thursday, March 26, 4-6pm; Gallery Talk 5pm. The artists work with textiles to explore identity, femininity, and Christian spirituality; closing May 1.

Senior Exhibition and Art Crawl are in April.

The Senior Exhibition & Art Crawl: Exhibition opens April 13 in Gallery 121 & The Belmont Mansion, by Graduating Seniors in Studio Art, Art Education and Design. Art Talk: Thursday, April 16, 5pm and Art Crawl: Thursday, April 30, 5:30-8pm. Exhibition ends May 1.
