Keeping up with what’s happening in District 2

Kyonztè Toombs

Greetings, District 2 residents.  I’m Kyonztè Toombs, your District 2 Councilwoman. There is a lot going on in the district, and I would like to keep you aware of what is happening. Some things may be of interest to surrounding districts, e.g.: 1, 3, 5, 19, and 21 as well. Thank you, Nashville Pride, for providing an opportunity to keep the public informed.

District 2 continues to be a hot spot for development. There are over 20 proposed projects that are in the works, and I’ve had meetings regarding several others. Most are focused on West Trinity Lane, Clarksville Highway, Whites Creek Pike, and Baptist World Center Drive. Most residents have asked for better amenities in District 2 such as entertainment options, sit-down restaurants, better retail, etc. The land use policy implemented for our district dictates that there will be increased density along the corridors, such as the roadways mentioned above. This increased density is projected to bring the increased rooftops and income necessary to support better retail, dining options, etc.

Any rezoning requests must be approved by the Council member in whose district the project is located. Before I approve any rezoning request and submit it to the Council in the form of legislation, I hold community meetings so that the people who live in the area surrounding the project have input.  Please note that requesting or applying to rezone a property does not come with guaranteed approval. The Planning Commission determines whether a request fits within the land use policy for the area.  However, a zone change requires a change in the law, and only the Council can change the law. The latest rezoning community meeting was held on February 3 at Beech Creek Church on Buena Vista Pike. All community meetings are posted on Facebook @toombsfortwo.

Other important events in District 2 during February include a Tax Relief/Tax Freeze signup on Saturday, February 15, from 10 am to 1 pm at Born Again Church located at 858 West Trinity Lane. Members of the Trustee’s staff will be onsite to sign people up for these programs. If you, or someone that you know, needs assistance with property taxes, please attend. Bring a neighbor. On Saturday, February 22, from 10 am to 5 pm at Watkins College, there will be a Job and Business Development Fair. Finally, there will be a very important community budget meeting on Tuesday, February 25, at 6 pm at the Northwest Family YMCA located at 3700 Ashland City Hwy. This meeting will take the place of the monthly District 2 community wide meeting. Bob Mendes, chair of the Metro Council Budget and Finance Committee, and I (vice-chair) will conduct the meeting. Please come out and learn about the budget and ask questions.
