How to dress for a spiritual battle

We are to be on guard always against the enemy attacks because we are not fighting flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness. Jesus advised us to be alert by being clothed in our spiritual armor. The Bible advises us how to be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might to defeat the unseen enemy. God tells us to put on the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. When you put on the armor of God, it’s like wrapping your entire body in the identity of Jesus Christ. Paul tells us we should: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to fight against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of the dark world. Against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms, so that when the day of evil comes you will be able to stand your ground,” Ephesians 6:10-19.

The ‘shield of faith’ is the first defensive armor worn in spiritual warfare. The shield of faith is used to ward off all the fiery darts the enemy sends our way. Faith and our belief in God and in his word is our best defense. Our entire Christian life is to be lived by faith. “The life that I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God,” Galatians 2:26.

The next armor of defense is the ‘breast plate of righteousness.’ When you put on this armor, it symbolizes that you are protected from accusations by Satan before God concerning your sins and faults. “For Satan is the accuser of our brothers,” Revelation 12:10.

The ‘shoes of the gospel of peace’ are our third armor of defense. When we struggle with temptations and discouragements, Jesus speaks peace to us. He gives us encouragement to keep on fighting. His peace protects our souls. The main challenge is in our minds; therefore, our challenge is to take every thought and bring it to conform to God’s way of thinking (2 Corinthians 10:5).

The fourth armor of defense is the ‘helmet of salvation.’ This armor provides us with the mind of Christ and the wisdom of God when we go into battle. The helmet of salvation is made possible by reading God’s word and through prayer.

The fifth armor used to defend us against the enemy’s attacks is the ‘sword of the Spirit or the word of God.’ This armor is an offensive weapon. The previous ones were defensive weapons. This is the one offensive weapon given to us by God to use against the devil and his demons. The authority of the word is the authority of God himself. This armor is to be used by believers to counter the lies and deception that Satan tries to get us to believe. The entire Bible is the ‘inspired word of God.’

Satan has no authority when it comes to the word of God. God has given us authority as believers to use His word as defense against sickness and diseases or any attack against us. According to Hebrews 4:12, the entire Bible is living and more powerful than any two-edged sword. The word of God is a living armory from which we can take living words when forced into combat with our spiritual enemy.

The last armor we need in our arsenal is the ‘girdle of truth.’ We need truthful and accurate information about who God is and who we are in Christ. We need to know how we can be brought back into relationship with Christ. We need to know the truth about Satan and spiritual warfare so that we can understand the things that are happening in our lives.
