“Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” Joshua 24:1-33.
In this address to the people of Israel, Joshua gathered all 12 tribes of Israel to a Canaanite city called She-chem, including: all the elders, of Israel, the judges, and their officers to present themselves before God. And the Man of God said unto all the people: “Hear what the Lord God of Israel has to say this day.”
Do you remember what Jehovah God has done for you? Do you remember His provision? Do you remember when and how He delivered you? What He has provided for you as His chosen people? Joshua was reminding them of the past blessings that God had already given to encourage them to continue to serve God faithfully.
There are times in our lives where we need to be reminded of the past blessings that God has given and achieved for us.
Their fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in olden times—even the father of Abraham, and the father of Na-ch-or. And they served other gods (2000 gods and goddesses of Egypt). God took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, led him throughout all the land of Canaan, multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac. God gave unto Isaac his two sons Jacob and Esau.
God gave Esau Mt. Seir. He sent Moses and Aaron to Egypt to give Pharaoh a warning to let His people go—“or I will curse Egypt with plagues.” Do you remember? This is what God did among them.
He turned water into blood, sent frogs, lice, flies, pestilence, boils under their skin caused by infection, inflamed hair follicles, hail, locusts, darkness, and their firstborn were killed. Do you remember?
God had the angel of death kill the firstborn sons of the Egyptians. He gave Moses a word to sacrifice a lamb and smear its blood on the door of Israelite houses so the Angel would know to pass over their houses. The Israelites were God’s chosen people. He brought them out. Do you remember?
God brought “you and your fathers out of Egypt.” The Israelites came to the sea and the Egyptians were on their trail at the Red Sea. They did not know what to do, but when they cried out to God—“worshiped me your God, I put darkness between you and the Egyptians. Darkness on one side and light to the other side.”
God put a cloud of darkness on the Egyptians. He gave light to the Israelites in the darkness. Do you remember? Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea moved back by the strong east wind. The water was divided all night, and the sea was dry land. The Israelites went into the midst of the sea and the water was a wall to their right and left. Do you remember?
When the Egyptians pursued and went in after them to the midst of the sea: “I, your God, looked on them through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, removed the wheels of the chariots, and the Egyptians said, ‘Let us flee from the face of Israel for the Lord is fighting for them.’”
The Lord then said unto Moses, stretch out your hand over the sea that the water will come against the Egyptians. The Lord, your God, overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. Do you remember?
The Israelites saw the great work of the Lord, feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and the Man of God (Exodus 14).
They dwelt in the wilderness for 40 years because they did not trust God. All that God did for them, yet they did not remember!
Are you willing to remember what all God has done for you?
