Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), the industry’s most anticipated annual event will take place on Saturday, August 14 at participating comic shops worldwide. The event, which traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in May, returns to a single-day celebration in August for the event’s milestone 20th anniversary. Local shops are open for FCBD both Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
Fifty titles are available for Free Comic Book Day, with twelve Gold Sponsor comics and thirty-eight Silver Sponsor comics, giving fans a great opportunity to discover new titles and genres. This year’s Silver comics include Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sonic the Hedgehog, Gloomhaven, The Smurfs, The Boys, Vampirella, Spider-Man / Venom, and more. Gold Titles include Archie, Avengers / Hulk, Who Sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott?, Blade Runner, and more.
“Every year, we strive to bring fans a memorable Free Comic Book Day experience, and with this year being our 20th anniversary, we hope it will be the best yet!” said Ashton Greenwood, Free Comic Book Day spokesperson. “The variety of this year’s comic book selection is really exciting! All locations of The Great Escape will have dozens of titles to choose from, including, but not limited to, the official Free Comic Book Day titles for their Free Comic Book Day Weekend Saturday 8/14 and Sunday 8/15. All locations except Bowling Green will be open regular hours both days of the celebration: from 12 p.m – 7 p.m. — but Bowling Green will be open an hour early on Saturday 8/14 — at 11 a.m. Everybody gets 5 free comics of their choice from a special selection each day — making for a total of 10 comics per person if you attend both days of the event. No purchase necessary; but there’s more: you’ll also get 1 more free comic book if you wear a costume to the celebration.
Comic City Too in Madison will be open Saturday from 11 am – 8 pm and Sunday 12 Noon to 7 pm; there you are welcome to 7 items per person each day.
Rick’s Comic City locations will be open Saturday from 10 am – 8 pm; 30% off almost everything in the store, tons of $1 books, one of a kind artist card giveaways, and a cosplay contest.
